From 1946 to 1951, a symbolic prize was awarded to the rider who finished the Giro d'Italia in last place: the Maglia Nera (Black Jersey). A jersey that represented the willpower and determination of those who participated and managed to complete the competition. Some cyclists who had no chance of winning jerseys in different categories opted to fight, almost to the death, for last place in the standings, which would still put them on the podium and in newspaper headlines. Luigi Malabrocca and Sante Carollo stood out in this fierce competition, resorting to all legal and prohibited tricks to arrive with the broom wagon: they hid in bars, restaurants, under bridges, or even sabotaged their bicycles. Malabrocca was the only one to win the prize twice consecutively, in 1946 and 1947, earning him the nickname "the last".
